Liebster Award

March 28, 2014

LIEBSTER AWARD UPDATE!!!  Pearls + Girls was nominated for a 2nd Liebster Award by Trisha @ The Lazy Mom’s Cooking Blog!  Not only have we hosted two parties on Facebook for #pieday and #saycheese, but she’s got the whole food + humor thing down to a perfect science, something this introverted baker can truly admire and appreciate! 🙂

It appears the specific requirements for the Liebster nominees are pretty flexible, but basically, it’s an award to recognize newbie bloggers and welcome them to the community!  An award from bloggers FOR bloggers, can’t get any better than that!!!

Trisha’s Liebster Award Rules apply this time around:
Thank the blogger who presented you with the Liebster Award and provide a link back to his or her blog. Prepare a blog post answering the questions from the nominator and create a list of questions for your nominees. Present the Liebster Award to several other up and coming bloggers who have blogs whom you feel deserve to be noticed.  Leave a comment on their blog letting them know they have been nominated.

Thank you, Trisha, for the nomination!  Here are my answers to your questions:

1.  Why did you start blogging?

I love to bake, my earliest memories of baking were in my grandma’s kitchen.  She was a wonderful cook and baker, when I make her recipes it brings those memories alive time and time again.  I’m a notorious recipe tweaker, but I never write down the new recipe!  So I decided to change that!  I was an elementary school teacher for eight years, and when our second daughter was born in 2011, I left my job to be a stay at home mom.  Now I have a bit more time to get in the kitchen and perfect my recipes, and blogging is the perfect platform to share what I love:  BAKING! 🙂

2.  What are three kitchen utencils you cannot live without?

KitchenAid Mixer – I use it almost every day!

French Rolling Pin – I hate rolling pins with handles, the wooden pin gives me so much more control over my pastry dough!

Silpat Baking Mat – I really don’t know what I did before the Silpat.  I bought one for myself as a birthday present five years ago, now I have two!!!

3.  Where do you see your blog in 5 years?

I hope to still be blogging and baking!  I started a new venture in February, my Etsy shop, PPGBakery, selling my made from scratch cookies, cakes and marshmallows.  I don’t know if I’ll be able to keep up with the demand for both, so we’ll see what the future holds for me…..

4.  What is your favorite and least favorite food?

My favorite food is bread.  Chocolate is a close second!  My least favorite food is raisins.  Sardines are a close second!

5.  What makes you most passionate about the topic of your blog?

I’m passionate about baking from scratch.  I love that I get to control the quality of the ingredients and preferably list them on 10 fingers or less.

6.  What is your favorite blog post?

My favorite blog post is about my Grandma’s Famous ‘to us’ Soft Sugar Cookies, because it is the recipe that inspired my love of baking.

7.  Other than blogging, what do you enjoy doing with your time?

I love to read historical fiction, and I’m obsessed with Downton Abbey.  I just finished watching Season 4, and I just may start the series all over again!  I often prop my iPad up on my cookbook easel and watch it while I wash dishes!  I love yoga and I recently started running, I plan to run my first 5k this summer!

8.  If you could live anywhere in the world, where would that be?

I love living in Ohio because we get to experience all the seasonal changes during the year.  I’m a huge fan of autumn, the beautiful changing leaves and crisp air, and I would miss having (the possibility of) a white Christmas each year.  I don’t care for the heat of summer, so a tropical beach is not my style.  It’s nice to visit, but I couldn’t live there all year round.

9.  What is your favorite animal?

I have a big dog.  She is 100 lbs and a gentle giant.  I grew up with big dogs.  I like BIG dogs.  I find little dogs insanely annoying.

10.  What food do you crave the most?

Really good sourdough bread and Ghirardelli chocolate.  I’m pretty sure I lived in San Francisco in another life.

11.  What is your favorite (most addicting form) of social media?

Definitely Facebook, it’s the only social media outlet I use daily.  I would love to become more familiar with Twitter, Instagram and Bloglovin’, but there are only so many hours in the day…

HAPPY BLOGGING, FOODIE FRIENDS! 😀

November 25, 2013

Wow, I have to be honest, until Anita @ Kitchen Getaway commented on my blog and said she was nominating Pearls + Girls for a Liebster Award, I had no clue what it was……thank goodness for Google!  It has saved me from cluelessness many times over, Google, you are so smart.  🙂

liebster[1]

After checking out what Google had to say and reading Anita’s Liebster Award blog post, I was pleasantly suprised to realize I had been discovered! 😉  After blogging to my friends and family for a little less than two months, someone NOT related to me through blood or the bonds of sisterly friendship actually commented on my website!  HOORAY!  I DO EXIST!

Of course, the honor of being selected as a candidate means that you must answer a few questions about yourself, as well as discover other bloggers and nominate them to carry on the tradition.  How cool is that ?!?!

SO, if you have been nominated, here’s the scoop on what to do next:

  1. Read my answers to the (10) questions selected by the blogger who nominated me.
  2. Find (10) bloggers with less than 200 followers to nominate for the award (FYI, I searched on Twitter and Facebook)
  3. Write a post on your blog featuring the Liebster Award.
  4. After you have written your post, comment on each nominee’s blog informing them of the nomination.

Thank you, Anita, for the nomination.  Here are my answers to your questions:

1.  What is your favorite dessert to make and eat?

My favorite dessert to make AND eat is tiramisu.  I love the combination of espresso and chocolate.

2. Choose a movie or record album you like and tell why you like it.

Father of the Bride (the remake with Steve Martin and Kimberly Williams)  It makes me laugh and cry, and it’s become a tradition to watch this movie whenever I have a transition in my life:  I watched it the day I moved into my new house while unpacking, the day before I got married, and in the hospital after giving birth to my daughter.

3. What is the team sport you enjoy watching or playing?

I don’t play sports, but I enjoy watching the Olympics.  My favorite sports to watch are gymnastics, swimming and figure skating.

4. What dish do you fix that always gets raves and is fixed in 15 minutes or less?

Omelettes.  On Sunday mornings I often make an omelette to share with my husband.  Our favorite is ham or bacon with mushrooms smothered with gruyere cheese.

5. What was your most memorable holiday?

Definitely Christmas.  Baking, decorating, gathering around the piano to sing Christmas carols and sharing a meal together as a family….it doesn’t get much better than that!

6. Describe your kitchen in one word.

CLUTTERED

7. Tell what season you like best and why.

Winter.  I get giddy with anticipation when I know it is going to snow…..I can smell it in the air!

8. What was your biggest cooking catastrophe?

When my husband and I were first married I made noodles with Thai peanut sauce.  The sauce was thick, brown, and stinky, it was barely edible.  To this day it’s the only dish my husband didn’t like, and he’ll eat just about anything, so that’s definitely saying something.

9. Do you have a favorite children’s story? If so, what?

Lucky and the Giant.  It’s a story my grandma used to read to me, and when she passed away no one could seem to find the book (it is currently out of print).  A few years later my sister found a copy on Ebay and gave it to me for Christmas.  Tears, lots of tears when I opened that package.

10. The hottest (with spice) dish you tasted and liked is?

I don’t like spicy food, but my dad’s baked bean recipe has a little kick to it, perfect for a summer bbq.
